Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in separate drives arrested 17 members of banned militant organisation Hizb-ut-Tahrir at different parts of the capital Thursday night and Friday.
According to a Rab press release, a team of Rab-1 conducted a drive in Nikunja Boro Mosque area of Khilkhet around 1:30pm and arrested nine members of the outfit.
The arrestees were holding an anti-government rally and distributing leaflets in the area during the drive.
In another raid, Rab-10 personnel arrested four more operatives of the outlawed group in Gandaria area around 1:55pm while they were holding a similar rally.
The Rab also recovered a large quantity of leaflets and other publications of the organisation from their possession.
In primary investigations, the arrestees admitted having involvement with the outfit, the press releases said.
Meanwhile, Raihan Uddin Khan, Senior Assistant Superintend of Police (ASP) of Rab-2, told that a team of Rab-2 conducted a drive in New Market area around 11:30pm on Thursday and arrested Dr Md Manirul Haque, 27.
As per the information given by Manirul, the team later raided Mohammadpur and Dhanmondi areas early Friday and captured three more operatives of the outfit, the Rab officer said.
The elite force members also recovered a number of jihadi books and magazines, leaflets, a laptop and a personal computer from their possession.
The process of handing over the arrestees to the New Market police was underway, the Rab officer added.
