Buet teachers demonstrating for the removal of the vice-chancellor and his deputy on Friday vowed to continue their movement until fulfilment of their demands.
“We hoped the government would remove the VC and pro-VC within two days to uphold the glory of the institution,” Prof Ashraful Islam, general secretary of the Buet Teachers’ Association, told on Friday.
"But we did not see any initiative from the government to resolve the ongoing crisis at the university," he said.
“We have no alternative but to restart our movement to press home our demand,” Ashraful said adding they will stage two-hour sit-in from 11:00am on Saturday in front of Buet Council Building as usual.
Earlier on July 18, the teachers postponed their demonstration for two days - Thursday and Friday - to show respect to the education minister's initiative in resolving the crisis through negotiations.
The postponement decision came a day after Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said the agitating teachers did not want a solution.
Regarding their threat to resign en masse, Ashraful said they have received spontaneous response from the teachers in this regard.
He said the mass signature collection in favour of their demands has already begun and the teachers are ready to quit if their demand is not met by 4:00pm on Sunday.
Since April 7, the Buet Teachers Association has been staging protests demanding the resignation of VC Prof SM Nazrul Islam and Pro-VC Prof Habibur Rahman. It has levelled 16 allegations against them, among which are the appointment of the pro-VC and a deputy registrar on “political consideration”.
