BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir blames Government for essentials' price spirals

BANGLADESH NEWS

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday alleged that a ruling party syndicate and the government have increased prices of essential commodities through manipulation ahead of Ramadan.

“Prices of essentials have already increased a lot. The government did not take initiatives to control it before Ramadan and a ruling party syndicate was behind it,” he said.

He was talking to reporters while visiting eminent Journalist Gias Kamal Chowdhury at his Dhanmondi residence. Mirza Alamgir visited Chowdhury on the occasion of his 73rd birthday.

Replying to a query, the BNP leader reiterated the party’s stance saying that Padma bridge should be constructed with World Bank fund otherwise it will create extra burden on the people.

He said the government is making different types of statements only to divert public attention from corruption. “Take stern actions against corrupt persons and talk to the World Bank to ensure loan for the Padma bridge,” he asked the government.

Former Dhaka University vice-chancellor Prof Emajuddin Ahmed, Daily Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman and eminent journalist Shawkat Mahmud, among others, were present.

Anti-Corruption Commission a puppet organisation government puppet: BNP leader Moudud Ahmed,Bangladesh

BANGLADESH NEWS

Terming the Anti-Corruption Commission a puppet organisation of the government, BNP leader Moudud Ahmed on Saturday renewed his allegation that the anti-graft body is working to implement the political agenda of the Awami League-led grand alliance regime.

“The government is using the ACC alongside the police as a means to subdue the opposition. The ACC is now busier harassing opposition leaders than finding out the real corrupt,” he said.

The BNP standing committee member came up with the allegation at a discussion titled ‘The Role of the Government and ACC in Curbing Corruption and People’s Expectation’.

Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Sangskritik Dal organised the programme at the National Press Club in the capital.

Moudud said the government and the ACC are playing the similar role in repressing the opposition. “The ACC is giving this corrupt government a clean certificate and harassing the opposition leaders implicating them in false allegations and reviving the false cases against them.”

Mentioning that the ACC nurtures a ‘slavish mentality’, the former law minister said if any organisation that works with such a mentality is unlikely to be able to work independently.

“We had formed the ACC with high hopes that it would work independently, but the organisation has failed to do so,” he said.

Moudud said the ACC could have proved its neutrality by taking action against those who were involved in corruption in quick-rental power plants, share markets and Padma bridge.

Claiming that the government has made Ilias Ali disappeared to hush up former railways minister Suranjit Sengupta’s corruption, the BNP leader said they are now in apprehension that the government may make another popular opposition leader disappeared to cover up its Padma bridge corruption.

Turning to the Padma bridge issue, Moudud termed impractical the government’s plan to build the multipurpose bridge with own funds.

Moudud once again suggested the government taking acting against those charged with corruption by the World Bank for paving the way for reviving the deal.

International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) : Bangladesh taken out of unsafe civil aviation list

BANGLADESH NEWS

International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has cleared Bangladesh off the list of countries having unsafe civil aviation system after keeping blacklisted for the last three years.

Bangladeshi aviation industry is now expecting a boost in business, as due to being on the significant safety concern (SSC) list local airlines did not get approval to operate flights on international routes for the last three years. Now these companies will get permission to fly on new international routes.

In addition, Bangladeshi aircrafts are likely to overcome restrictions imposed by several European countries to land and take-off at their airports.

This is also a step forward for the country to resume Dhaka-New York flights, as the SSC listing was a major obstacle in this regard.

This will also help Bangladesh be upgraded Category-1 from the existing status of Category 2. The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in 2006 demoted Bangladesh to Category 2.

“We have received a letter from the ICAO sent on July 19 saying that Bangladesh has been cleared off the list of SSC countries,” said Wing Commander S M Nazmul Anam, director of flight safety and regulation of CAAB.

“We have been able to satisfy the ICAO with an all-out effort to comply with their instructions to ensure safety in flight operations,” said Anam. Citing the letter he said, "The collective actions of Caab in addressing and resolving the safety threats were found satisfactory."

Bangladesh had been on the list of SSC countries, which is considered as ‘blacklist’ in aviation industry, since May 2009 when the country failed in an inspection.

Ramadan Essentials Prices shoot up In Bangladesh

BANGLADESH NEWS

Consumers started feeling the pinch with essentials prices soaring on the Ramadan eve, driven by the high profit motive of retailers.
According to Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), the retail prices have increased by 10 percent on an average from the previous year.
Vegetables, including cucumber, aubergine, green chilli and lemon, and also gram, date, lentil, onion and packed edible oil were dearer at Dhaka bazaars yesterday.
“Today I bought a kg of cucumber at Tk 35, which was Tk 30 two days ago,” said Md Ghulam Mawla, a retired banker, who was shopping at the Mirpur-11 kitchen market.
He added aubergines sold at Tk 40 a kg yesterday but at Tk 30 only a week back.
“Why should vegetable prices go up within a few days despite adequate supply?” Mawla said. “The fixed-income people find the situation too tough to survive.”
At Karwan Bazar kitchen market, retailers charged Tk 30 for every four pieces of bigger-size lemons instead of Tk 15 two days ago.
According to the Department of Agricultural Marketing, green chilli yesterday sold for Tk 60-70 a kg -- 18.18 percent higher over the previous year.
To help boost supply during the Ramadan, the government has already imposed a ban on export of green chilli, aubergine, onion and garlic until August 31.
In April-June of just concluded fiscal year, gram imports stood at 58,130 tonnes, up from 39,081 tonnes of the same period last year, according to Chittagong customs data.
The latest imports reflect a surplus compared to the demand for gram estimated at 50,000 tonnes during the month of Ramadan, according to Bangladesh Tariff Commission, which monitors the essentials prices on behalf of the government.
Gram, a key item for iftar, was selling at Tk 100-120 a kg at the city's retail markets yesterday; it is nearly 50 percent higher than the wholesale prices.
“Today we are selling gram at Tk 78-79 each kg at wholesale market,” said Shafi Mahmud, president of Bangladesh Pulses Traders Association. “So, there is no reason to sell gram at 50 percent profit margin.”
Wholesalers at Karwan Bazar were selling cucumber at Tk 20 each kilogram yesterday, but retailers increased the price to up to Tk 40 at different markets.
Traders cited a number of reasons -- higher transport costs, extortion by law enforcement agencies and ruling party men and shop rent hike -- behind such a higher price gap between retail and wholesale markets in the capital.
The lentil price also rose by 22.70 percent to Tk 112-115 a kg over the previous year, according to TCB data.
Date, another iftar item, is trading at Tk 300; the price was Tk 250 last year.
However, the prices of some vegetables and spices such as potato, onion and garlic remained stable yesterday.
Despite a rise in supplies, sugar price also spiralled yesterday. At retail shops, it was between Tk 55 and Tk 56 a kg or 5.71 percent higher compared to the previous month.
To keep the sugar price stable during the Ramadan, the government slashed it by Tk 5 per kg on Wednesday. The state-run Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation was selling each kg of sugar at Tk 55 instead of Tk 60 on retail.
The price of loose cooking oil remained unchanged but that of packed cooking oil rose in the last few days. For a 5-litre can of edible oil, retailers charged Tk 670-680, which was Tk 650-660 a week ago.
