Apparently reacting to remarks of a state minister, BNP said on Saturday that they are demonstrating not to pave way for a third force but to go to power themselves.
"We are not demonstrating to hand over [state] power to a third force. BNP wants to claim power itself through an election under a non-partisan caretaker government," party's Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said at a programme in the city.
"We will not share power with anyone else," he said.
Alamgir's statement came in response to the remarks of State Minister for Law Qamrul Islam.
While addressing a discussion on Friday, Qamrul pointed finger at BNP, accusing them of supporting the emergence of a 'third force' as they themselves "were born out of the Cantonment".
"Their aim is to subvert democracy through a 'negative force'," he had alleged.
The BNP Acting Secretary General denounced the remark saying his party and the 18-Party Alliance neither had any relation with a 'third force' in the past nor did they have now.
"Rather", he said, "the Awami League supported all the 'negative forces' whenever they occupied power."
He also demanded restoration of the annulled caretaker government provision for maintaining peace and stability in the country.
The programme was jointly organised at the party's headquarters by the metropolitan units of BNP and its allies.
