Flood situation worsens as rivers swell; flood-hit Sindurna village in Hatibandha upazila of Lalmonirhat,Bangladesh

Flood situation in Netrakona, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram and Gaibandha districts turned grim yesterday as most of the rivers flowing through the districts marked a further rise.
Meanwhile, heavy rains in the last two days and onrush of water from hills across the border have triggered a flash flood in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts.
Our Netrakona correspondent reported that flood engulfed fresh areas in Durgapur, Kalmakanda, Atpara, Madan and Khaliajuri upazilas yesterday morning, marooning at least 50,000 people.
Executive Engineer ATM Khalequzzaman of Netrakona Water development Board (WDB), said the areas have gone under water as Someshwary, Dhanu and Ubdakhali rivers swelled further on Monday night.
Durgapur upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Kamruzzaman Mia, also UNO- in-charge of Kalmakanda upazila, said 20 villages under Gawkandia, Kullagora, Bakoljura and Janzail unions of Durgapur upazila and 30 villages under Borkapon, Rongchati, Karnai and Koilati unions of Kalmakanda upazila have been flooded.
Khaliajuri upazila administration sources said 10 new villages in the upazila have been submerged. Aman seedbeds and vegetables fields in the affected areas have gone under water.
In Lalmonirhat, water from overflowing Teesta and Dharla entered the low-lying areas in five upazilas of the district yesterday, affecting around 40,000 people, according to our correspondent.
Teesta was flowing above 8 centimetres above the danger mark at Dowani point in Hatibandha upazila while Dharla was flowing 2 centimetres above the danger level at Kola Khawa ghat point in Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila yesterday noon, BWDB Lalmonirhat office sources said.
The fresh areas affected by flood are Angarpota-Dahagram, Bawra, Kuchlibari in Patgram upazila, Votmari, Kakina in Kaliganj upazila, Goddimari, Sindurna, Dawabari, Patikapara in Hatibandha upazila, Mohishkhocha, Durgapur in Aditmari upazila, and Khuniyagachh, Rajpur, Gokunda, Mogolhat and Kulaghat in Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila.
Our Kurigram correspondent reports: With the swelling of Dharla, Teesta, Dhudkumar and Brahmaputra rivers on Monday night, flood situation further deteriorated in eight upazila of the district yesterday.
Dharla was flowing seven centimetres above the danger level at Dharla Bridge point in Sadar upazila yesterday afternoon while water level in the Teesta at Kaonia point and the Brahmaputra at Chilmari point continued to rise, local Water Development Board sources said.
The affected areas are Gharialdanga and Bidyananda unions under Rajarhar upazila, Thethrai and Bazra unions under Ulipur upazila, Halokhana, Bhogdanga, Mogalbasha and Pachgachi unions under Kurigram Sadar, Thanahat, Raniganj, Chilmari, Ramna and Astamirchar under Chilmari upazila, and Shaulmari, Roumari and Jadurchar unions under Roumari upazila.
The flood-hit people have taken shelter on embankments and high lands. They face acute crises of food, fuel and drinking water.
Our Gaibandha correspondent adds: Flood hit fresh areas at 35 villages in Sunderganj upazila yesterday, leaving around 14,000 people marooned.
The affected areas are Char Tarapur, Char Khorda, Latshaler Char, Belka Nawabganj, Charitabari, Burail, Lalchamar, Bhorer Pakhi, Fakirer char, Kalai Soter Char, Keranir Char, Patrokhata, and Kapasia Char in Sunderganj Upazila.
Some of the affected people have taken shelter on the flood control embankment. Mozaharul Islam, chairman of Haripur Union Parishad said they are trying to rescue flood victims from remote char areas by hiring country boat. The affected families face food and drinking water, he added.
Upazila administration with the help of local NGOs has already started rescuing the flood-hit families from remote char areas, said Ahsan Habib, UNO of Sunderganj upazila.

The Surma and Kushiyara rivers were flowing above the danger marks at several points yesterday.
The Sylhet city experienced 95 mm rainfall yesterday. Road communication between Gowainghat upazila and Sylhet city has remained snapped since yesterday noon as Sari-Gowain road in Salutikor area have been inundated.
Surma was flowing 30 cm above the danger mark in Sylhet, 100 cm in Sunamganj town and 40 cm at Kanaighat yesterday, Water Development Board sources said.
Breaches have developed in Surma dyke at Kanaigahat and Kushiyara dyke at Zakiganj, the official informed.
Sylhet District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Md Rafiqul Islam said the low-lying areas in Gowainghat, Companiganj, Jaintapur and Kanagihat have been flooded inundated due to heavy rains in the last two days and onrush of water from hills across the border.
