Bangladesh 78.67pc pass HSC, equivalent exams Rajuk Uttara Model College on top of colleges,Dhaka-Bangladesh

The results of this year's Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent exams have been announced with overall pass rate of 78.67 percent.

The results of the HSC exams under eight education boards stands at 76.50 percent, a rise of 4.14 percentage points, while 51,469 students secured the highest grade point average (GPA)-5. The number of GPA-5 achievers increased by 17,084 than that of the last year's.

This year students have done significantly well in English and in other major subjects in all groups, which is one of the main reasons for increased pass rate and number of GPA-5 scorers, observe board officials and teachers of renowned colleges.

The pass rate in English in the 6 boards is over 80 percent while in two boards is over 70 percent. In Dhaka board, 87.38 percent examinees passed in English.

The results published on Wednesday show a significant improvement in other indicators -- the number of examinees and institutions increased, the number of colleges with cent percent pass rose remarkably while the number of colleges with zero pass remained static.

Like last year, no students passed from 24 educational institutions this year, and as many as 1036 institutions witnessed cent percent success which was 892 last year.

The combined pass rate in all the 10 education boards, including Alim examinations under Madrasa Board and vocational examinations under technical board, broke all the previous records with 78.67 percent examinees coming out successful. Last year, the combined pass rate was 75.08 percent.

Under the 10 boards, 61,162 students -- 33,168 boys and 27,994 girls -- scored GPA-5, which were 39,769 last year.

As many as 9,17,673 students from 7,465 institutions took this year's HSC and equivalent exams. Of them, 7,21,979 passed and 1,95,694 failed. A total of 558 cadet students out of 539 scored GPA-5.

"If we analyse all the indicators we will find a positive trend in the country's overall standard of education. It signifies that we are doing well not only in terms of numbers but also in standard,” said Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid at a press briefing after publishing the results officially.

He said the discrimination between rural and urban areas is decreasing as the students from rural areas are doing well. "Most of the rural students opted for humanities group and the result of humanities group is quite well."

Earlier, the minister handed over the results to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Gono Bhaban, where the premier attended a teleconference and sent the results of Rajshahi Government College and Rajshahi Girls Government College via internet.

This year's HSC results published simultaneously at all examination centres and educational institutions Wednesday noon, in 55 days since the exams ended on May 24. The results were also available on the education board website and on cell phones through SMS (short message service).

This year, Bangla 1st Paper examination was held under creative question paper and the pass rate in this subject is over 90 percent in all general boards except Barisal.

Although boys outshone girls in terms of achieving the highest grades girls did well in terms of pass rate. The pass percentage of boys and girls this year stands at 78.23 and 79.19 respectively. In 10 boards, 33,168 boys and 27,994 girls scored GPA-5.

Four colleges outside the capital grabbed their position in the list of 20 best institutions in Dhaka board. However, Rajuk Uttara Model High College topped the chart.

Abdul Kadir Mollah City College in Narsingdi, Mymensingh Girls' Cadet College in Mymensingh, Mirzapur Cadet College in Tangail, and Shahid Syed Nazrul Islam College in Mymensingh ranked second, third, seventh, and fourteenth on five academic standards.

As many as 179 students under Dhaka board sat for the exams in five centres abroad and of them 169 came out successful.

As usual, science students scored the highest number of GPA-5 trailed by the students of business studies and humanities groups. Statistics show that like the previous years, almost one-third of GPA-5 scorers are from Dhaka board.

Like the other years, Alim examinees under Madrasa board did exceptionally well compared to other nine boards with a pass rate of 91.77 percent. In terms of pass rate, Sylhet Education Board tops the chart among the eight general education boards while Barisal gets the bottom.
