Padma Bridge response Enthusiastic: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,Bangladesh

BANGLADESH NEWS

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said the people of the country was showing great enthusiasm to help after the government declared to build the Padma bridge on its own following cancellation of promised fund by the World Bank.

"A school boy called me and said he would save his allowance for tiffin and transportation for the Padma bridge. This is the kind of enthusiasm…," she said on Thursday.

Stressing the country should be self-reliant, Hasina said, "We only want progress… No more dependency… We liberated the country through a war. We want to do it on our own."

She was speaking at the 55th anniversary function of the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital.

The World Bank on Jun 29 cancelled its $1.2 billion loan to the $2.9 billion Padma bridge project alleging corruption, which Bangladesh refused. The Asian Development Bank (ADB), which promised $610 million for the project, also hinted of following the Washington-based global lender.

The Prime Minister on Sunday in Parliament announced that the government would build the bridge with its own fund as she outlined the project following the global lender's decision. The Cabinet also took a decision to this on Monday.

She also refused the corruption allegations, but given out two mobile numbers and an email address so that people could approach her directly if they found someone trying to take undue advantage using her name or that of her family members.

She praised the contribution of the BSCIC enterprises for the country's economic development and diversification and modernisation of industrial production. "The government has also undertaken massive development programmes to ensure progress of the 'BSCIC Industrial Towns'."

Every year BSCIC enterprises produce goods worth about Tk 290 billion, out of which products worth Tk 170 billion are exported.

Police thwart rally of CNG auto-rickshaw drivers,Bangladesh

BANGLADESH NEWS

Police on Thursday thwarted a rally of the CNG-run three-wheeler auto-rickshaw drivers in the capital organised to press home their 10-point demand.

Police charged baton on their pre-announced rally around 11am in front of the National Press Club. They alleged that some of the protesters were injured while police detained four others.

Meanwhile, no CNG auto-rickshaws were seen plying in the city on the second day of their indefinite strike enforced from Wednesday.

The auto-rickshaw drivers in Dhaka enforced the strike to press home their 10-point demands including distribution of new 5,000 auto-rickshaws among them and stop 'harassment and extortion' by police.

The Dhaka Zila Auto-rickshaw Shramik Union and Dhaka Auto-rickshaw Shramik Union declared the strike.

Meanwhile, CNG-driven Auto-rickshaw Owners' Association, who were supposed to join the agitation, had call off the strike on Tuesday.

Shahbagh Police Station Petrol Inspector (PI) Mohammad Shahid told bdnews24.com that the auto-rickshaw drivers began gathering in front of the press club since morning. Police told them not to block the road.

"But instead they brought out a procession. Some of them received injuries from the metal barricades kept on the side of the road when we chased them," he said.

Two of the injured, Lal Mia, 60, and 'Khokon', 56, were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, he said adding, "None of them were detained."

Injured CNG auto-rickshaw driver 'Khokon', however, told reporters at DMCH that police charged batons in their peaceful rally. "They also took four protesters."

The other demands of the CNG auto-rickshaw drivers include taking legal actions against owners for charging more rent than fixed by the authorities, establishing parking areas for auto-rickshaws in the city and cancelling the provision of re-examination during renewal of driving license.

'Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asks Buet VC to continue talks with agitators',Bangladesh

BANGLADESH NEWS

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday asked Vice Chancellor Prof Nazrul Islam and Syndicate members of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) to continue talks with agitating teachers to bring an end to the ongoing impasse on the campus.

The VC said this to just after emerging from a meeting with the prime minister. The Buet delegation headed by Prof Nazrul went to the prime minister's official residence Gono Bhaban in the evening to discuss the deadlock.

Prof Nazrul earlier in the day described demands by agitating teachers as unethical. “If any of the points teachers raised against me is proved, I will step down. I cannot resign against unethical demands.”

The came up with the remarks at a press conference on the campus in the afternoon amid continued demonstration by the teachers of the university demanding his resignation.

Buet Teachers' Association, meanwhile, reiterated their determination to continue agitation to press home their 16-point demand that include mainly the resignation of the VC and Pro-VC.

Earlier in the day, the VC said that they want to meet the prime minister and then the president to discuss about the recent stalemate brewed from the demand of their resignation.

“I have sought for an appointment to the prime minister. I will see her as soon as I get the appointment. I will also seek for the appointment of the president,” Prof Nazrul told  Thursday morning.

He also informed that he is waiting to discuss the ongoing impasse with Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, who is off to Sylhet until Saturday.

Prof Mujibur Rahman, president of the association told , “Until and unless the vice-chancellor and pro-vice-chancellor are removed, we are going to go on with the sit-in agitation."

“If these two are retained in their offices, no negotiation will be fruitful to dissolve the stalemate”, he said, adding “Till now, no authorities have responded for a resolution.”

The association president's comments came a day after heads of all faculties, institutes and departments of Buet resigned en masse after the authorities declared a 44-day vacation amid teachers-students agitation on Tuesday.

The agitation reflects an expression of no-confidence on the university administration over “irregularities” in promotions and appointments.

Following the closure, agitating teachers and students have been staging a sit-in in front of the Buet administrative building from Wednesday.

Terming the VC’s announcement of the vacation “unilateral, arbitrary and illegal”, Prof Mujibur said, “The VC did this to foil the teacher-student agitation against academic and administrative anomalies.”

And this move of announcing vacation basically sparked the long-drawn resentment among the Buet community that led to the en masse resignation, he said.

Explaining why he termed the vacation as such, Prof Mujibur said, “The Buet academic calendar does not have such a long vacation. Segments of the 44-day vacation have been shown as ‘summer vacation’, ‘Ramadan vacation’ etcetera whereas Buet never enjoyed a ‘summer vacation’ in the past.”

He warned that only the academic council could make such alteration to the academic calendar, not the VC alone.

On queries, the VC said in the face of unavoidable circumstances, I have declared the vacation to evade any possible clash among the students.

The VC also claimed that he declared the vacation except the one for summer according to the academic calendar of the institute.

He also claimed that the university ordinance empowers him to declare summer vacation.

Law Minister Shafique Ahmed said on Thursday that the government has taken up steps to update the contempt of court law, which will specify issues to be considered as the contempt of court.

A bill for amending the contempt of court act has been placed in the parliamentary standing committee on law, justice and parliamentary affairs and it may be passed in the next session of parliament, the minister said.

He was talking to reporters after attending the deputy commissioners’ conference at the Cabinet Division conference room.

Country in deep crisis: BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir It blames govt for pushing Bangladesh towards confrontation

BANGLADESH NEWS

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday said the country has plunged into a deep crisis, as the government pushed it towards confrontation by snatching people’s basic rights.

“The government has pushed the country towards destruction and conflict. Bangladesh is now in deep crisis. They have infringed on the basic rights of people,” he said.

Fakhrul was addressing the inaugural session of a daylong political workshop of the party at a city hotel.

The BNP spokesman said his party does not want any conflict and chaos in the country. “We want peaceful solutions to people’s problems but the government is unable to realise that.”

He alleged that the ruling party is trying to establish a one-party rule again under a different cover in the name of democracy.

“Taking advantage of its brute majority, the government has infringed on people’s basic rights and right to vote through the 15th amendment to the constitution.”

The BNP leader said the government annulled the caretaker government system and made all the pillars of the state dysfunctional just to cling to power.

Fakhrul also alleged that the present regime is shattering the country’s all important economic sectors, including garment, textile and poultry, to make Bangladesh dependent on others.

“The poultry sector is on the verge of ruination. Many poultry farms have been closed down. Now eggs are being imported from India.”

He urged the district-level party leaders to tell people at the grassroots level about the government’s misrule and failure to run the country.

About the BNP’s 4th political workshop, he said there is no alternative to training at this age of globalisation to do politics and create competent leaders. “We’ll have to acquire knowledge about governance and contemporary issues."

He hoped that the workshop will help build BNP as an unbeatable political party.

BNP standing committee members Khandker Mosharraf Hossain, and Nazrul Islam Khan, its vice-president Selima Rahman and BNP chairperson’s adviser Shamsuzzaman Dudu also addressed the session.

Seventy-seven leaders of BNP’s 28 district committees, including presidents, general secretaries and organising secretaries, took part in the workshop.

In October, 2011, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia formally inaugurated the party's political training programme at her Gulshan office.
