BNP's mass hunger strike at Gulistan

BANGLADESH NEWS

The government has permitted the BNP-led opposition alliance to organise a hunger strike at the city's Mohanagar Natya Moncho on Sunday.

Apart from the capital, the 18-party alliance will simultaneously stage the programme at district headquarters to reiterate the demand for finding missing BNP leader M Ilias Ali and for the release of its top leaders.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is to lead the seven-hour strike starting at 10:00am, party’s standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan said at a rally on Saturday.

The opposition alliance has targeted to gather more than 20,000 leaders and activists at the programme.

A former lawmaker and an organising secretary of the BNP, Ilias Ali and his driver went missing on the wee hours of April 18 from Banani area.

A number of front-ranking alliance leaders including BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam have been sent to jail in hartal violence cases.

On May 14, the alliance declared a set of programmes which include submitting memorandums to deputy commissioners on May 23 and staging demonstrations across the country on May 27 on the same demand.

The opposition had earlier sought permission to organise the programme at any venue from Mohanagar Natya Moncho, Ramna Park, Jatiya Press Club premises and in front of BNP's Nayapaltan office.

The alliance leaders were sceptical about getting the permission government’s ongoing tough stance on the opposition, BNP insiders said.

Getting the government’s nod at the last moment has given some space to the opposition, the party leaders said.

Earlier on May 14, the BNP-led alliance was not allowed to bring out its scheduled mass procession in the capital.
