The agitating Buet teachers postponed their demonstration for two days from Thursday to show respect to the initiative of the education minister to resolve the ongoing crisis.
"Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid has taken initiatives to resolve the impasses. We thank him for that," said Prof Ashraful Islam, general secretary of Buet Teachers' Association, while addressing a press briefing in front of the vice-chancellor's office.
"We postponed the demonstration for two days only to prove that we didn't launch the movement to embarrass the government," he said in response to the education minister's remarks that the teachers association of Buet does not want a peaceful solution.
At the briefing, the teachers condemned the VC for his threat to recruit teachers, if the protesting teachers resign en masse.
"This kind of remark from a VC of Buet is an act of utter irresponsibility. The VC who could talk like this should resign instantly," the general secretary said.
Prof Ashraf said there was no scope of misunderstanding between the minister and the agitating teachers.
It is not possible for the Buet teachers to work under the VC or Pro-VC who failed to run properly one of the country's most prestigious institutes and that is why they decided to resign en masse, he said.
The education minister on Tuesday discussed the crisis with senior Buet teachers and former students and vice-chancellors in a bid to solve the crisis and said the agitating teachers did not want a solution.
The comment came a day after the Buet Teachers Association that leads a movement for the removal of the VC and his deputy threatened to resign en masse if their demand is not met by 4:00pm Sunday.
The movement began on Wednesday after the authorities shut the institution for 44 days in advance for Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr. The same day, the heads of all faculties, institutes and departments of Buet resigned in a body.
