The government has cut sugar price by Tk 5 per kilogram to sell at Tk 55 in the retail market in a bid to prevent artificial crisis and protect consumers' interest during Ramadan.
Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC) would sell sugar at Tk 55 instead of Tk 60 in the retail market, Industries Minister Dilip Barua told reporters at his office on Wednesday.
The state-run agency has also re-fixed Tk 50 for each kg of sugar instead of Tk 55 at wholesale market.
"The price will be Tk 50,000 per tonne in the wholesale market," Barua said.
But the new price will be effective only during Ramadan, he added.
BSFIC has slashed the sweetener price following a criticism that government was selling sugar higher than the market price.
