Speaker Abdul Hamid will issue a ruling on the parliamentary debate over Justice A H M Shamsuddin Chowdhury's comment against him, Deputy Speaker Shawakat Ali told the House on Wednesday.
However, the ruling alliance MPs were adamant to send a proposal to the President to constitute Supreme Judicial Council to impeach the High court judge.
The MPs reacted sharply on Tuesday in the House as Justice Chowdhury commented that the Speaker committed a 'crime tantamount to sedition' after Hamid last week criticised a High Court verdict over the ownership of a piece of land and urged it to reconsider the verdict.
The ruling alliance MPs also threatened to revive the constitutional provision to impeach judges if Justice Chowdhury was not removed.
In this circumstance Workers' Party President Rashed Khan Menon MP raised the issue on Wednesday in the House after question-answer session. Then Deputy Speaker, who was presiding, said, "The Speaker will issue a ruling on this."
Menon said, "You (Deputy Speaker) told us that you will inform us about this. The nation is waiting for your ruling. Everyone is waiting for your decision."
But the deputy speaker's speech seemed to fail to satisfy the ruling MPs who were still demanding that a proposal be sent to President Zillur Rahman for removal of Justice Chowdhury by constituting Supreme Judicial Council.
"This is not a matter of ruling, it's a matter of resolution," Minister without portfolio Suranjit Sengupta said.
"We want to send it as a resolution to the President. He will take necessary steps. The President can take decision in this regard," he added.
Awami League MP Tofail Ahmed, referring to newspaper reports published on Wednesday, said, "It seemed that he (Justice Chowdhury) has questioned Parliament's sovereignty."
"We'll take a decision. And it will be the entire parliament's decision. The speaker will give his opinion [on it] and then he will send it to the President as a proposal," he said.
At the end, Shawkat said, "The speaker will deliver speech in parliament on the issue considering all aspects. But not today (Wednesday)… you have to wait for a couple of days."
"He (Speaker Abdul Hamid) is going through the Constitution and other laws," he added.
