DHAKA: Pointing to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Opposition Chief Whip Zainal Abdin Farooque said the Prime Minister would not be able to obstruct the May 20 mass hunger strike, which is set to be led by opposition BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.
He said: “You did not give permission to use venue for staging mass hunger strike. But Khaleda will lead the demonstration and you cannot obstruct.”
He came up with the determination while addressing a human chain held in front of National Press Club on Saturday morning demanding withdrawal of cases filed against top 18-party leaders and release of them.
BNP already gave an ultimatum to the government to restore caretaker government system in the constitution or face one-point movement to oust it after June 10, said Farooque.
He added: “The party would enforce tougher program that would not be obstructed using police, RAB and AL cadres, if our demands are not met by this time.”
Regarding BNP leaders shifted to Kashimpur Jail in arson case, he said, “The democracy will not be detained in Kashimpur.”
Farooque also sought interference of the President to bring back the party leader Ilias Ali, restore caretaker government system and stopping ongoing harassment of opposition leaders before starting Jatiya Sangsad session on May 27.
Sheikh Hasina will face dire consequences than autocrat Ershad and Iyub governments, if it fails to restore Caretaker Government System in the Constitution, he commented.
The human chain was addressed, among others, by BNP central leaders Barkat Ullah Bulu MP, Ashraf Uddin Nizan MP, Abul Khaiyer Bhuiyan, with Greater Noakhli district Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Forum convener Bazlul Karim Chowdhury Abed in the chair.
On May 15, BNP led 18-party alliance announced to observe mass hunger strike programme on May 20 demanding rescue of Ilias Ali alive and protesting abduction, killing, oppression by police and attack on opposition leaders and activists.
The programme will be observed in all metropolitans and districts of the country from 10am to 5pm.
The 18-party alliance will also submit memorandum to all Deputy Commissioners and UNOs on May 23 demanding fair price of farmers’ paddy, restoring caretaker government, supply of gas, water and electricity.
