The University Grant Commission (UGC) has urged the government to form a higher education commission for overall development of education in the country.
The proposal came when a UGC delegation, led by its Chairman AK Azad Chowdhury, met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her Secretariat office on Thursday.
PM’s Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad briefed reporters after the meeting.
In response to the UGC proposal, the prime minister said the government will consider constituting the Higher Education Commission after consultation with the finance ministry.
They also discussed the overall education system of the country.
Hasina said the government wants to set up a modern and time-befitting education system and a new education policy has been formulated to this end.
The UGC members described various activities and problems of the commission and sought cooperation from the government in resolving those.
The prime minister assured them of looking into the matters.
