BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday said the country has plunged into a deep crisis, as the government pushed it towards confrontation by snatching people’s basic rights.
“The government has pushed the country towards destruction and conflict. Bangladesh is now in deep crisis. They have infringed on the basic rights of people,” he said.
Fakhrul was addressing the inaugural session of a daylong political workshop of the party at a city hotel.
The BNP spokesman said his party does not want any conflict and chaos in the country. “We want peaceful solutions to people’s problems but the government is unable to realise that.”
He alleged that the ruling party is trying to establish a one-party rule again under a different cover in the name of democracy.
“Taking advantage of its brute majority, the government has infringed on people’s basic rights and right to vote through the 15th amendment to the constitution.”
The BNP leader said the government annulled the caretaker government system and made all the pillars of the state dysfunctional just to cling to power.
Fakhrul also alleged that the present regime is shattering the country’s all important economic sectors, including garment, textile and poultry, to make Bangladesh dependent on others.
“The poultry sector is on the verge of ruination. Many poultry farms have been closed down. Now eggs are being imported from India.”
He urged the district-level party leaders to tell people at the grassroots level about the government’s misrule and failure to run the country.
About the BNP’s 4th political workshop, he said there is no alternative to training at this age of globalisation to do politics and create competent leaders. “We’ll have to acquire knowledge about governance and contemporary issues."
He hoped that the workshop will help build BNP as an unbeatable political party.
BNP standing committee members Khandker Mosharraf Hossain, and Nazrul Islam Khan, its vice-president Selima Rahman and BNP chairperson’s adviser Shamsuzzaman Dudu also addressed the session.
Seventy-seven leaders of BNP’s 28 district committees, including presidents, general secretaries and organising secretaries, took part in the workshop.
In October, 2011, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia formally inaugurated the party's political training programme at her Gulshan office.
