Communications Minister Obaidul Quader on Wednesday asked the deputy commissioners to take steps to tackle traffic on roads and highways ahead of the upcoming Eid to minimize the suffering of people.
The minister’s instruction came on the second day of the three-day conference of deputy commissioners (DCs) at the Prime Minister's Office.
Quader also asked the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) to form 'mobile units' to accelerate repairing potholes and tarmac, and to take steps to make the roads usable during the rainy season.
Services of public toilet facilities at roadside restaurants and petrol pumps must be improved and made available as the number of highway commuters increases with the Eid-ul-Fitr approaching, he instructed the DCs.
The minister explained that many road maintenance projects are delayed or remain stalled as the Planning Commission delay in releasing fund or sanction less than required fund.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the conference on Tuesday where the DCs are to highlight problems they are facing in their respective districts.
The premier would give them necessary guidelines on her government's priorities and policies.
This year, a total of 410 issues of 39 ministries are to be discussed during the conference.
