Tigers go down roaring Pakistan clinch a cliffhanger to deny Bangladesh Asia Cup

DHAKA NEWS

Pakistan denied Bangladesh the celebration of the biggest moment in their cricketing history when they beat the hosts by two runs in the nerve-wracking Asia Cup final at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur yesterday. Pakistan enhanced their reputation as masters of the big moment by clinching the Asia Cup for the second time after first achieving it in 2000 in the same city but at a different venue, at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.

But the Tigers left the field with their heads held high and they can feel proud even in defeat after the way they have performed in this tournament. Some players were seen weeping after this heartbreaking defeat as once again they were so close yet so far. The deafening noise coming from the stands as pacer Aizaz Cheema ran in to bowl the last ball was suddenly transformed into a deathly silence when Shahadat Hossain failed to hit the winning boundary as Bangladesh finished their 50-over quota on 234 for eight in reply to Pakistan's 236 for nine.

Everybody was at the edge of their seats when Bangladesh required nine runs from the last over but ultimately the home team could manage only six at the cost of the wicket of Abdur Razzak.

In the end, the profligacy of Shahadat Hossain, who conceded 19 runs in the last over, and the slow batting from Nazimuddin (16 from 52 balls) and Nasir Hossain (28 from 63) played a major role behind the defeat, although incredibly Tamim Iqbal made yet another fifty, his fourth consecutive half-century. And of course, the fantastic Shakib Al Hasan hit 68 runs and credit goes to Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, who smashed a nine-ball 18, for taking it so close.

After a 68-run opening partnership between Tamim and Nazimuddin, Bangladesh lost three quick wickets but Shakib joined Nasir Hossain to steady the ship. They seemed to be batting with the mantra of keeping wickets intact as much as possible because they played from overs 23.1 to 42.3 to share 89 runs for the fourth wicket, but sadly for the home side, the Tigers could not make up the run rate in the death overs.

Pacer Aizaz Cheema first brought Pakistan back into the match by removing Shakib and captain Mushfiqur Rahim in quick succession before the right-arm pacer kept his nerve in the last over to deny the Bangladeshis their glory.

Earlier, Mushfiqur Rahim maintained his hundred percent record in winning the toss to field first and the Bangladesh bowlers did an excellent job apart from the Shahadat's chaotic last over to restrict Pakistan to 236 for nine.

Wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed, who had a highest ODI score of 24 before this game, turned 199 for 8 into 236 for 9 with a 52-ball 46. Many thought Pakistan were still short on a pitch that had been favourable to the chasing side through the tournament.

Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, Abdur Razzak and Shakib Al Hasan took two wickets each to make sure none of the Pakistani batsmen were able to score big as Mohammad Hafeez (40), Umar Akmal (30), Hammad Azam (30) and Shahid Afridi (32) failed to carry on from good starts.

After that, many started to dream of achieving their biggest victory in history in front of high-profile guests like Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Leader of the Opposition Begum Khaleda Zia, but they fell two runs short.

Despite the defeat it will not be unwise if someone shouts at the top of their voices “Bravo Bangladesh”, “Bravo Tigers” because they showed rare consistency in the tournament which will definitely silence the critics who often criticise the Tigers' performance at the international level.

Pakistan won the trophy but it was Bangladesh who won the hearts of millions.

'Lack of Transparency Causing Sweet Water Decline'

DHAKA NEWS

Speakers at a human chain yesterday said lack of transparency and good governance were the causes behind the decline of sweet water sources, which include rivers, beels and canals, posing a threat to the lifestyle of the people.

Some seven green and human rights bodies, including Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) organised the programme before the city's Jatiya Press Club marking World Water Day 2012.

Their slogan was “Water for life and livelihood: Transparency and accountability to save water resources, including the river Poshur”.

Addressing the programme, TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said food security and livelihood sources were under imminent threat due to encroachment and pollution of rivers and water bodies with toxic industrial and household wastes.

Climate change has increased the salinity of the country's southern region, turning the land barren and threatening a severe food crisis, he said.

The speakers also urged the government to refrain from setting up a coal-fired power plant at Rampal in Bagerhat district.

“Establishing such a power plant on the banks of the Poshur river without any environmental impact assessment will adversely affect the sweet water sources and the biodiversity of the Sundarbans,” they said.

Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon General Secretary Dr Muhammad Abdul Matin and columnist Syed Abul Maksud also spoke at the programme.

Meanwhile Jaago Foundation, marking the day, initiated a 3-day programme from yesterday which includes cleaning the city's Banani lake and creating awareness among slum dwellers on the importance of safe water use, says a press release.

In another event marking the day, a seminar, “Safe Water for Safe Food”, was organised at the Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) auditorium.

Speaking as the chief guest, State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives Jahangir Kabir Nanak said though access to water was a fundamental right, many people were still deprived of it for various reasons.

DPHE, Unicef, World Bank, Bangladesh WASH Alliance, Japan International Cooperation Agency, Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies and NGO Forum for Public Health jointly organised the seminar, says a press release.

Facebook Asked to Block Unholy Pages

DHAKA NEWS

Dhaka, Mar 22 The Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) on Thursday requested Facebook authorities to block public access to five pages on the social networking website.

The BTRC move came a day after the High Court ordered blocking of the five pages and a website for containing material blasphemous to Islam.

"We have requested Facebook to block the pages. Besides, necessary steps are being taken to shut the other website," said BTRC chairman Zia Ahmed.

Bangladesh Computer Security Incident Response Team, a special body BTRC formed in January this year to combat cyber crime, is also working to identify the people responsible for opening the pages and the website, sources said.

"BTRC cannot block pages on Facebook unless it decides to block the entire social networking website. That's why we have asked the website authorities to take the required action," explained a cyber crime expert of BTRC on condition of anonymity.

The other website would also be shut down once the person operating the website is identified, he added.

He, however, declined to disclose the pages and the website under question.

The court order came in response to a writ petition filed against the five Facebook pages and the site for containing objectionable remarks against Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) and Islam.

The High Court also ordered the home secretary, information secretary, inspector-general of police, director-general of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and BTRC to ensure implementation of the order.

ICT-2 Gazette Published

DHAKA NEWS

Dhaka, Mar 22 The government on Thursday formed the second International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) to accelerate the pace of war crimes trial.

To accord the new tribunal, headed by Justice ATM Fazle Kabir, a statutory body status with immediate effect, a gazette has also been published in this regard.

Justice Fazle Kabir was a member of the first tribunal, where he has been replaced by Justice Anwarul Haque.

The other two members of the new body are Justice Obaidul Hasan and registrar of the first tribunal Shahinur Islam.

Earlier in the day, law ministry joint secretary (administration) Abu Saleh Sheikh Mohammad Zahirul Haque told  that president Zillur Rahman has approved the new entity.

On Wednesday, a top government source told that the tribunal will go into action from Mar 25.

The government decided to constitute the second tribunal as the ruling party leaders would repeatedly vent their frustration over the 'slow pace' of war crimes trial, which began on Mar 25 2010, every now and then.

On Tuesday, state minister for law Qamrul Islam had said the second tribunal is coming in a day or two.

The law ministry has already completed construction of the tribunal accommodation at the Old High Court building.

Holding trial of war criminals was one of the key electoral pledges of Awami League. The 9th parliament unanimously approved the proposal of holding the trial at its first sitting. It, however, took the government over a year to set up the first tribunal.

The first tribunal was formed with Justice Nizamul Haque as the head. Retired district judge AKM Zaheer Ahmed was the other member of the tribunal. A seven-member investigation panel and 12-member lawyers' panel were also constituted along with the first tribunal.

Jamaat-e-Islami former chief Ghulam Azam, its current chief Matiur Rahman Nizami, secretary general Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed, assistant secretaries general Kamaruzzaman and Quader Molla, executive council member Delwar Hossain Sayedee and BNP leaders Salauddin Qader Chowdhury and Abdul Alim are facing charges of committing crimes against humanity at the first tribunal.

LIBERATION WAR IN SCULPTURE Aparajeyo Bangla at Dhaka University

DHAKA NEWS

yed Abdullah Khalid is regarded as one of the most brilliant sculptors of our country. A multitalented artist, Khalid has not only excelled in sculpture but also made an impression with his paintings.

Khalid's “Aparajeyo Bangla” on Dhaka University campus has become an evocative icon. The sculpture is a reflection of the Bengali consciousness and indomitable yearning for freedom. The project was launched in 1973 when this artist was a young teacher at the Department of Fine Arts, Chittagong University. Throughout the making of the sculpture, Khalid had to face religious anarchism and negative reaction from the bigots.

Nevertheless Khalid -- high on patriotism -- was determined to finish the work of art.

xHasina Ahmed, Syed Hamid Moksood and Badrul Alam Benu, who are very close to Khalid, modelled for “Aparajeyo Bangla”. The artist closely observed the models' personalities and his close association with them enabled him to do justice with his portrayal. On August 15, 1975, the work suddenly came to a halt because of the heinous murder of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Political instability and the arrest of the then Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University, Abdul Matin Chowdhury, also disrupted the work.

The project remained incomplete till the end of 1978. Some fundamentalist groups tried to demolish the sculpture in 1977. However, the brave students of Dhaka University fiercely guarded the work. After a long hiatus, the work began once more in the beginning of 1979 -- with a new vision. At last the project was finished on December 16, 1979. The sculpture was inaugurated by wounded freedom fighters.

“There are monuments recognised and commissioned by the government, and then there are those made by the people. 'Aparajeyo Bangla' falls in the latter category. I wanted to do doing something for my country and fellow citizens. After the Liberation War, I contemplated a plan to create a symbol which would inspire generations of Bangladeshis,” asserted Khalid.

Losing himself in nature, Khalid takes themes from this infinite source and plays with colours on the canvas. He likes to experiment with different forms and adores breaking and constructing them in many ways. In many of Khalid's works, one finds a great interchange between abstract and realistic forms. Works of Mustafa Monwar, Rashid Choudhury, Quamrul Hasan and Zainul Abedin inspire Khalid.

Today Khalid has become the model of an ideal artist. Unfortunately he has received no assistance from the government or any organisation. However, the artist has no complaint. Imagination, love for nature and motherland continue to drive his artistic endeavours.

No Caretakers, no Polls:Opposition Leader Khaleda Zia

DHAKA NEWS

Dhaka, Mar 20 Opposition leader Khaleda Zia has said there will be no elections in the country without a 'non-party' caretaker government.

"Either the elections will be held under a non-party caretaker government, or there will be no elections," said Khaleda Zia towards the end of her about two-hour speech delivered on the thanksgiving motion on the president's speech on Tuesday.

"If there is no election, you (the current government) will be forced out of power. People have not accepted the 15th constitutional amendment and they will not accept any election without a caretaker system," said Khaleda two days after she returned to parliament after a long absence of 83 days.

She also referred to a ruling MP's recent interpretations of the court order, basing on which the 15th amendment was effected. He had said the order did not provide any scope for reinstating the caretaker government system.

"Don't confuse people with wrong interpretations," she said.

"Awami League knows its popularity has touched nadir and they cannot make it through a fair election. So, they (Awami League) want to cling to power by indulging in tactics."

She also said electronic voting machine (EVM)-based elections would not be accepted as it is controversial globally. She also asked for a credible Election Commission.

Other issues the opposition leader spoke about include division of the Dhaka City Corporation, inflation, lack of job opportunities, rise in prices of essentials, border killings, journalist couple's killing, corruption, 'politically-motivated' promotion of government staff and Awami League's repression on media and journalists 'for telling the truth'.

She also alleged that AL assumed power with help from Fakhruddin and Moinuddin-led government and through rigging.

Khaleda maintained that in the three years since the current government assumed power, student wing of the ruling party, Bangladesh Chhatra League, clashed over 350 times, killing opposition activists and its own party activists.

She also castigated the government for 'using police as a political tool, kidnapping political leaders and getting them killed secretly by RAB'.

The opposition leader also regretted for not being able to thank the president while speaking on the thanksgiving motion on his speech, as he had failed to rise above his political identity.

"The president's speech has become nothing but the manifesto of the party from which he comes…," said Khaleda.

She congratulated the government and the people in the foreign ministry for winning the battle against Myanmar over maritime boundary dispute. She, however, claimed that the success was an outcome of the continuation of the process initiated by her government earlier.

Ruling party lawmakers reacted to very few comments as Khaleda went on with her speech.

At one stage, speaker Abdul Hamid said, "If you want to say everything in your maiden attendance at parliament and others start following your example, it will become very difficult for an aged man like me to carry on like this."

She left the House immediately as soon as she finished her speech.

BNP back to save JS Membership: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina

DHAKA NEWS

Dhaka, Mar 20 Prime minister Sheikh Hasina has thanked opposition BNP and its chief Khaleda Zia for returning to parliament, though she said the aim of return is to keep their remunerations and allowances flowing and to retain their membership.

"I thank the opposition chief. They've joined the House to retain their membership so that they can draw their remunerations and allowances properly. She returned after a long time and left the House after her one-hour and 53-minute speech," Hasina said on Tuesday.

"Honourable speaker, you can ask her (Khaleda) where she had been for this long," she said taking part in the thanksgiving motion on the president's speech.

The prime minister remarked that the speaker showed his patience during the BNP chief's two-hour speech.

Terming Khaleda's speech a novel, Hasina said: "Someone wrote the novel and she just read it out," Hasina added.

The prime minister listed the successes attained and development works undertaken by the government.

Earlier, while taking part in the discussion on the president's speech, Khaleda said the government will have to quit if it does not accept the opposition demand to hold elections under a non-party caretaker government.

Bangladesh Cricket HISTORY Tigers in final

DHAKA NEWS

We are part of history today. The collective joy of 160 million people has finally been given a rightful place as the Tigers, the beloved Bangladesh cricket team, reached the finals of a major cricket tournament for the first time in its cricket history last night.

In beating Sri Lanka by five wickets, the country's most talked-about group of sportsmen reached the Asia Cup final where they will meet Pakistan tomorrow.

It is the fruition of several years of toil, tremendous hardship in the last decade and exasperation with one-off performances. The packed house at the Tigers' home of cricket, the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, was the scene of history and at times it seemed every Bangladeshi was at the ground. When Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal walked in to bat, it seemed they did so with every cricketer who ever played for the country; it wasn't baggage, it was responsibility that they carried with them. The two world-class cricketers delivered at the right time, winning a place in history and putting themselves on a different pedestal.

At 10:56pm, Nasir Hossain hit the winning boundary off the first ball of the 37th over in a stiff chase where they were asked to chase 212 runs in 40 overs following a 105-minute rain break. Sri Lanka were bowled out in 49.5 overs for 232 after a superb bowling performance by Nazmul Hossain and Mashrafe Bin Mortaza.

The crowd went absolutely nuts as the ball passed mid-on and into the boundary; the players ran in, the music was on full volume. A little while later, the Tigers took a victory lap with three flags surrounding them. It was a scene that will stay on with those lucky enough to witness it.

The unbroken sixth wicket pair of Nasir Hossain and Mahmudullah Riyad added 77 precious runs after Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal, the real architects of this victory, both fell within the 24th over.

Tamim hammered 59 off 56 balls with the help of nine glorious boundaries, but his stay ended through a very good catch at point by Lahiru Thirimanne from off-spinner Sachithra Senanayake in the 20th over with the team on 116 for four. Five of his boundaries were through the leg-side while four came on the off-side. Some of his shots, the chipped drive over the bowler's head, the straight drive through his partner Shakib's legs at the other end, the flicks past mid-wicket's right and left, all oozed class. He reached fifty off 46 balls with a stunning straight-drive. But unfortunately, he couldn't latch on to the one life he got, a dropped catch by Senanayake.

Shakib too was excellent and once again delivered under duress. He cracked seven boundaries in his 46-ball 56 before becoming Senanayake's second victim. The all-rounder added 76 with Tamim but played in his unique way, hammering boundaries, top-edging some and even mistiming a lot early in the innings. In the eleventh over, Shakib opened his proper repertoire with a cover drive and a cut but it was the 21st over, bowled by the young offie, that showed what Shakib was really made of. After chipping one softly but safely, between cover and extra-cover he saw one fall short of the bowler after managing only to get a leading-edge on another. He followed it up with a cut boundary, before being beaten but still finished the over by reaching his half-century off 43 balls with a chipped drive over extra-cover's head.

Senanayake finished as the best bowler on show for the Lankans with 2-38 from eight overs but the pacemen were handled quite well by the Tigers' batsmen who have showed rare consistency in attitude and performance in this tournament.

Earlier though, it was Nazmul who was the undoubted hero with the ball. Starting off with the wicket of Mahela Jayawardene with a beautiful in-ducker that came in just as much was required to sneak in between the Sri Lanka captain's bat and pad, the 24-year-old was on fire. Kumar Sangakkara hammered a checked cover-drive into Nazimuddin's lap to become Nazmul's second while Dilshan dragged the ball to the stumps to make it 32 for three in the tenth over.

The man from Habiganj may have been the man with the wickets but it was Mashrafe Bin Mortaza who kept things under control throughout his three spells. He ended up with a wicket from his 9.5 overs, the wicket becoming the last ball of the Sri Lanka innings in the 50th over but it was his discipline that paid off. His performance with the ball so far has been a tribute to his rehabilitation efforts over the past eleven months.

Abdur Razzak continued to be steady, giving away only 40-off from ten overs but this time he took two wickets (both however down to luck), while Shakib and Shahadat Hossain were slightly expensive but still had their moments.

After the three quick losses, Chamara Kapugedera and Lahiru Thirimanne staged a fight-back of sorts by adding 88 runs for the fourth wicket. It was broken by the freak stumping of the left-hander Thirimanne by wicketkeeper Mushfiqur, who found out the Gary Player way of luck in sports (the more you practice, the luckier you get); his left pad helping him out with the ricochet that caught the batsman, who made 48 off 73 balls, out of the crease.

Kapugedera had another solid batsman at the other end as Upul Tharanga helped him add 49 runs for the fifth wicket. The right-hander struck his first fifty in almost two years, hammering 62 off 92 balls with the help of four boundaries; Shakib bringing an end to his stay with an excellent low catch at cover. The left-hander at the other end, Tharanga, took the side past the 200-run mark but couldn't reach another half-century, falling two short. He struck five fours and a six in his 44-ball knock.

Tributes were flowing in even as the Tigers left the stadium after a remarkable effort. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was among the first to congratulate the team, having watched most of the Bangladesh innings at the stadium. According to her press secretary, the Prime Minister personally congratulated each member of the team and reiterated that the country was overjoyed at the victory. She also wished them luck for the final on Thursday.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for making 'Kunming Initiative' a success

DHAKA NEWS

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday said Bangladesh and China could work together to make the 'Kunming Initiative', including Bangladesh-China-Myanmar road link, a success.

She also hoped that China would remain responsive to some of Bangladesh concerns to reduce the trade imbalance between the two countries to some extent.

The prime minister said this when newly-appointed Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Li Jun met her at her office.

PM's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad briefed reporters after the meeting.

Hasina invited more Chinese investments in textile, agro-processing, energy and power, pharmaceutical, communications and infrastructure development saying that the Chinese entrepreneurs could avail of excellent opportunities on offer for foreign investment.

She also said Bangladesh attaches great importance to its friendly relations with China.

Issues relating to pending projects like direct road link, communication satellite, deep seaport, new friendship bridge and the proposed Padma Bridge also came up for discussion at the meeting.

Hasina said the present government emphasised further advancing the Comprehensive Partnership of Cooperation with China.

She expressed her happiness over the continued Chinese assistance and support for various key development projects like power, agriculture, infrastructure and telecommunications in Bangladesh.

Hasina also voiced satisfaction over the steady growth of bilateral trade though the trade imbalance is heavily tilted against Bangladesh.

She recalled her successful visit to China in March 2010 as well as the tour of the Chinese Vice-President to Bangladesh.

Hasina reiterated Bangladesh's steadfast support to 'One China Policy' considering Tibet and Taiwan as the integral parts of mainland China.

The envoy paid rich tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and recalled the great leader's visit to China.

He also highly praised the visionary and dynamic leadership of Sheikh Hasina and said Bangladesh has achieved tremendous success in socioeconomic development due to various pragmatic steps of the present government.

Ambassador at-Large M Ziauddin, Prime Minister's Office (PMO) Secretary Molla Waheeduzzaman and Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad were present on the occasion.

Tauqir, Bipasha Sued for Fraud

DHAKA NEWS

A sister of actor Tauqir Ahmed filed a case against Tauqir and his wife Bipasha Hayat on Monday for allegedly misappropriating about Tk 1.57 crore.

Tanzin Haider, an expatriate living in Sweden, filed the case with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Dhaka in the morning.

After hearing the case, Metropolitan Magistrate Shahadat Hossain recorded statement of the complainant and took the charges into congnisance.

In her complaint, Tanzin alleged that the couple received $1,77,482 and Tk 15 lakh from her through bank and cash in two phases for setting up a firm named ‘Nakshatra Bari Resort and Convention Centre Limited’.

But the celebrity couple later refused to return the money or give her any share, the complainant alleged.

A legal notice, served on the Tauqir and Bipasha on January 26, which asked them to return the money or hand over the share. Otherwise, legal action would be taken against them, the legal notice said.

After getting no response from the couple, Tanzin filed the case on Monday.
